My headcanon for the Jellicle Cats' age groups and order!! based (almost) entirely on the 1998 movie because that's the only one I've seen and trying to keep up with all the other versions is simply too much for Smooth Brain
sorry if some of the ideas presented here are already widely accepted! while I've known and watched cats since I was a kid, this is my first time participating in the fandom

* Because of the sexual nature of some of the dances, some of which involve the kittens, I hold the idea that it's sort of like a Warrior's situation, where kittens are brought to the Ball only when they're already capable of handling themselves alone. so even the youngest cat attending the Ball is already pretty grown
** Misto seems like a very young cat, and at times feels to me like he could be even younger than Victoria, maybe made to grow up sooner due to his ability with magic, similar to how very talented kids are made to grow up very quickly. at the very least, I consider him the youngest adult (besides Victoria when she comes of age in her first dance).
Honestly I'm very hesitant to call either of them kittens, however, because they are at times each paired with a character solidly in the adult age range and it makes me feel icky to imagine a pairing with one kitten and one adult. like I get that Plato is paired with Victoria probably because he's the Tall one and can do lifts the best, but still. gosh I wish it wasn't a ""mating"" dance
*** Okay so I know the ensemble cat Asparagus and Gus the Theater Cat are supposed to be the same character, but I really like both the of characters from '98 separately so my headcanon is that they're different and happen to have the same name because Asparagus is a human word and could easily have been given to them as their first out of three names
**** While Growltiger's song presents him as an opera character, Griddlebone is mentioned to have maybe worked for Macavity at some point. I don't feel like when talking about how dangerous Macavity is, they would joke around that a completely fictional character had done evil deeds for an actual living menace. Rather, I imagine that they were historical figures that were later fictionalized, sort of like blackbeard
***** Okay so, I like to think that Macavity has ALSO lived several lives, though not nearly as many as Old Deuteronomy, and not by going to the heavyside layer through Deuteronomy. he's already super magic, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he might have found a rinky dink way to be reborn (and is now using that opportunity to chase after Deuteronomy in an attempt to get rid of him for good and take complete control of the Jellicles) (this would also aid the idea that Griddlebone was alive at some point and worked for him centuries ago)
